Games at twilight:


1-Ravi wants to be mature, win the game and be like the older kids.

2-Ravi hides in the shed, he passed the limits of the Veranda and porch that her mother had previously put.

3-The dare in this story happens when Ravi has to deal to hide in the spooky, odd and queer shed.

Conclusion: He didn’t mature nor complete the rite of passage.



1- Tommy’s unreachable thing is to save the girl from being a thief. He thinks that his life has a purpose but he doesn’t understand that the one that needs help is him.

2- Tommy’s trespassing moment is when he bought a slot machine without asking Rosa or her father.

3- Tommy’s dare is to save the girl from being a thief. He thinks that his life has a purpose now.

4- There is no element four because he didn’t confess with matureness. He hit Rosa lika an immature.

5- There is no element five because he didn’t understand that the girl is just a girl and not a thief and he is the one that needs help.

Conclusion: He didn’t mature nor comple the rite of passage.



Games at twilight:

1- ‘”You are dead” he said with satisfaction.’ This foreshadows Ravi’s death of innocence and chilhood in the end.

Prison: ” Then he remembered how he had felt when Dome has gone, and tears filled his eyes”. The moment of foreshadowing in Prison happens when Tommy starts thinking about his uncle and his relationship with him and this, after, affects his decision about how to talk to the girl.

Specular moment:

Games at Twilight: The specular moment in this story happens when Manu was caught by Raghu and Ravi realises that he was the next one, that he had no escape. He started to feel panic.

Prison: “He felt he ought to do someting for her, warn her to cut it out before she got trapped and fouled up her life before it got started”. This quotations shows how Tommy sees her future reflected on his life. He wanted to warn her because she would end up being a thief. However, he couldn’t see the truth, he was the one who needed help.



Games at Twilight: One of the epiphanies in Games at Twilight happens at the end, when Ravi realises that he was a kid, that none of his friends care about him and that he had to mature.

Prison: The epiphanic moment in Prison happens when Tommy realises that his mind was a prison. He couldn’t get out of it and take his own decisions. He didn’t have the faith nor security to do it. A great quotation which explains it is this one: “You could never see the sky outside or the ocean because you were in a prison, except nobody called it a prison”.

Throughout the story, mood and atmosphere change constantly. They influence on the decisions and feelings of Ravi on two different ways. One of them is the setting, the weather of that day and people surrounding Ravi and the other one is how the first point affects in Ravi’s decisions as I said before.

On the first page of the story, Anita Desai shows the weather as “too hot”. The author uses “too” to indicate that it was not a comfortable day, it was an oppressing day. To make the situation even worse, Ravi and his family had been obligated to stay inside their house, which increased the heat in the house. Moments later, the kids were released out of the prison.When this happened, they decided to play hide and seek. This led to Ravi hiding in a dark, mysterious shed. This shed was essential for the story because it was dark, spooky and was full of animal life. However, the most important quality was that in the shed forgotten things were kept. As time passed, “twilight” arrived, and Ravi realized this happened when some things that only happened at that time of the day: “The scent of earth receiving water, slaking its thirst in great gulps and releasing that green scent of freshness, coolness”. Here, we can appreciate in a formal language one of the things that happened at twilight on Ravi’s house. Also, twilight symbolizes death, sadness, it joins and separates two opposites and it’s a moment of revelation. Ravi finally got out of the shed at twilight. Outside, all his family was staring at him. He finished laying on in the ground.

Every moment in which setting changed, Ravi’s feelings and decisions also changed. In Games at Twilight, these two are very connected. At first, as it was too hot, kids felt suffocated and were suffering a lot: “Their faces were red and bloated”.Here, the book shows to us that, as it was too hot, they suffered because of the oppressing atmosphere. That’s why, later on, they shouted and acted as wild animals, because they were released from hell. Then, when Ravi is in the shed, he felt scared because of the place the shed was but, at the same time, he felt protected as he listened to Raghu outside: “He felt almost relieved to hear Raghu, hear his stick. It made him feel protected”. Here the author expresses that he was afraid but, as Raghu was near, he felt safe. After this moment, he just stayed in the shed, daydreaming what would it be the moment when he had won. But then, at twilight, as he realized it was growing darker, his first epiphany took place: he had forgotten to touch the den. It was not a coincidence, Ravi realized that he was forgotten because twilight is sadness, moment of revelation. When he got out of the shed, the people around him looked at him in a weird way. At first, they didn’t know even who he was but when they recognized him they were asking themselves what was he doing. At this situation, Ravi felt rage and pity, and was crying in a desperate way. Then, his family invited him to  play another game, and his second epiphany took place: his innocence was dead: “The grass is green, The rose is red, Remember me, When I’m dead, dead, dead…”. In here, the story shows through symbolism that what was dead was Ravi’s innocence.

In conclusion, mood and atmosphere play an important role as they influence a lot on the character’s decisions.

This wonderful story takes place in a too hot, sunny day. Some children were inside their house in this terrible summer heat. The author uses “too” to indicate that it was not a comfortable day, it was an oppressive day: “Their faces were red and bloated”. In this quotation, we can see that, as it was too hot, they suffered a lot. After the kids begged to go outside, they were finally released from the house, with the condition of just staying in the porch and on the veranda: “A band of parrots suddenly fell out of the eucalyptus tree”. This shows that their reaction was so crazy to the extent to be compared with animals. Finally, between line 1 and 38, we can find language used to express suffocation: “They feel that their lungs were stuffed with cotton wool”. This expresses that kids were feeling like in a prison.

At the first two pages. the story concentrates in three characters: Raghu, Manu, and Mira. Mira is the oldest girl in the family. She is called the “motherly” of the kids because, as she is the oldest, she acts like a mother. Manu is the smallest of the family. We can say he is innocent because he’s just a little boy and he’s inoffensive. He admires the older kids, specially Raghu. Finally, the book mentions Raghu. He is one of the oldest of the family. He is tall and has long, hefty, hairy, football player legs. He’s a bad loser, aggressive and a bully. He has as an objective to make the other children feel scared of him. Younger kids admire him.

Then, the story focuses on one character, Ravi. At first, he felt scared, desperate and felt the desire to be older. He was hiding in a flower spot but, as he heard Raghu coming, he entered a mysterious shed. This shed was dark, spooky, full of animal life and with forgotten things. This is important to Ravi’s feelings because they are symbols of death and shows that Ravi has been forgotten as the things inside the shed. In spite of this, he felt he was a winner after Raghu didn’t find him: “Ravi shook, then shivered with delight, with self-congratulation”. Here we can see Ravi was proud of himself and expected to win against Raghu for the first time. Also, it gives us the foreshadowing of what’s going to happened next.

When Ravi was inside the shed, as we have already said, he felt he finally was going to defeat Raghu and he felt protected when he heard him coming, but, at the same time, he felt scared because of being in such a dark and spooky, full of animals with a muffled smell place. Inside the shed, Ravi started daydreaming about how was going to be the moment when he would win the game. Although he was daydreaming things which happened on real life, he decided to stay inside the shed and life went on: “The parents would sit out on the lawn on cane basket chairs and watch them as they tore around the garden”. In this quotation we can see what Ravi was daydreaming about. When he was thinking what would it be when he reached victory, he thought that his uncle would buy him a whole chocolate bar for him, he would defeat Raghu and he would be the winner in a group of older kids than him.

When twilight approached, he started to hear the children singing and chanting, he could saw purple shadows of the shed, the sound of water falling and the lawn was shut off his view. He had forgotten he had to touch the den, he had forgotten the other part of the game. He felt forgotten and abandoned. When he was outside the shed, the children were playing other games. He felt rage and pity inside, he had tears in his face, he felt miserable while shouting: “Den! Den! Den!”. Moreover, he felt he was forgotten as well as the things inside the shed. When the others saw this situation, they all stared at him, they didn’t recognize him. They were wondering what was he doing, what did he pretended to do with that “wild animal howling”. After this, the children started to make an arc and chanted: “The grass is green, the rose is red; remember me when I am dead, dead, dead, dead”. This symbolises that what was dead was Ravi´s childhood and innocence. He felt upset
